Click here to download the CLE description

Registration deadline: January 15, 2012

Testing: First full week of February

Cost: 75 cents per student

Grade Levels: 3rd – 12th

Format: Students provide the term that answers the question. There will be fifty such questions to be completed in thirty minutes:

e.g. What Latin phrase refers to something indispensable? Answer: sine qua non

Awards: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Honorable Mention and recognition certificates will be awarded as well as medals for high placing exam scores.

Procedure: Teachers grade their own students’ exams and report results. Teachers must decide for themselves when a misspelling amounts to a mistake. Students are not allowed to use the lists or any other reference materials while taking the exam.

A file containing the tests and answer sheets will be emailed to teachers in time for them to make copies for their students. Teachers will likewise email their results using the supplied form.

Four levels of difficulty: Introductory and Levels I-III. Teachers decide which test provides the best challenge for each of their students. Level of Latin or grade in school need not correspond to the level of the CLE taken.

Syllabi: A complete list of terms, phrases, and other identifications is provided. The list for the Introductory Exam is included in the list for Level I. The Level II exam also requires knowledge of the Level I list, and the Level III exam requires knowledge of the Level I and II lists as well. All of the lists are posted on this site.

Study Suggestions: Take practice tests; do matching exercises; play CLE certamen/jeopardy; have students work in groups to compile a CLE dictionary. Sample questions and matching exercises will be posted on this site.

Registration: Registration forms may be downloaded from this site and sent to:
